Local Community Events The immediate Stockton area offers a wide range of activities. The city has an active Recreation Commission offering adult and children's activities year-round. Fitness and sports enthusiasts can take advantage of the municipal swimming pool, two ballparks, sand volleyball pits, Frisbee golf course, Skateboard Park, fitness trail, driving range, bowling alley, nine-hole golf course, and a standard all-weather running track. Lighted basketball and tennis courts are planned in the near future. The Nova Theatre, built in 1932, has been renovated and developed into a multi-purpose cultural arts center, offering movies, live performances, workshops and classes in the arts, as well as serving as a meeting place for conferences and social events. Stockton is located within an hour's drive of six large man-made lakes with over 40,000 acres of public hunting area. In the immediate vicinity are Webster State Park and Reservoir and Kirwin reservoir. These facilities offer camping, fishing, hunting, and other outdoor activities. The entire area abounds with pheasant, quail, deer, and wild turkey making a hunter's paradise. An outstanding feature of the community is the Rooks County Free Fair, the Fair of the Champions since 1879. Large numbers of 4-H, open class, and commercial exhibits show the long-standing pride the county takes in the fair. Quality talent programs, car and motorcycle races, and carnivals add up to making this fair one of the best. The Solomon Valley Antique Engine and Machinery Association's annual show attracts antique machinery enthusiasts from all over Kansas and neighboring states each July, making its home in Stockton.
